George van Dam and Simon Lenski take a contemporary approach to Bachs Goldberg Variations. With an eye on performance and visual art, they add context to this iconic work and develop its internal structure, whilst preserving its musical integrity. George van Dam performs the Goldberg Variations on harpsichord in their entirety. Simon Lenski fulfils the role of dancer-performer, drawing on his insight into the score as a musician.
Unconventionally conventional. Or to quote Friedrich Schiller: “Be a child of your time, but do not become its product.”
Goldberg Variations was initially to be shown live on the Day of Dance and Needcompany's EXPLO in MILL, Molenbeek, but both performances were cancelled due to the pandemic. With the support of the activities grant (activiteitenpremie) of the Flemish Government, a recording of the performance was made in Monty, Antwerp on 17 December 2020. The online premiere took place on 29 December 2020. The recording will remain available until 1 January 2021.
