In 2017, Needcompany moved from the centre of Brussels to Molenbeek, kick-starting a fresh dynamic thanks to the possibilities created by its new home MILL, a workplace for creation and presentation. A splendid thousand square metres was transformed - with investment subsidies from VGC and the Vlaams Brusselfonds - into a new artists’ house where creation, collaboration, connection and interaction take centre stage. The move to MILL had a huge impact on Needcompany’s operations; which since 2017 have been twofold - Needcompany as an international touring artists’ house and MILL as its local counterpart.
On the one hand, MILL is the home base for the artistic work of Jan Lauwers, Grace Ellen Barkey, Maarten Seghers and other artists who are supported in their creation, distribution, and framing at a financial, dramaturgical and promotional level, whereby the work is presented on various stages worldwide.
On the other hand, since 2017 Needcompany has been committed to local operations starting from MILL in which the focus lies on supporting external artists, entering into collaborations with other organisations, and opening up MILL to a local audience. This led to extensive collaboration and new durable relationships with new generations of artists.
Needcompany continues to focus on co-producing diverse artists and companies, chiefly starting from authorship. Under the banner of the ‘blank canvas’ concept, Needcompany looks for the connection between artists that share a similar philosophy. Making new work is essential; it starts from nothing, the so-called ‘blank canvas’, as a guide for writers, composers, scenographers and choreographers.
All this led to the development of a creative hub in Molenbeek established by Needcompany on the Gosset site of Citydev.Brussels, where today Peeping Tom, Faso Danse Théâtre, Level Five and not standing / Alexander Vantournhout are also part of this inspiring place.
