Under the wing of Needcompany, Viviane De Muynck is steadily building up an international career in which she combines directing at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg with acting in Wooster Group plays and holding workshops and guest lectures for international institutions. After the success of Die Vagina Monologe, she will once again be working with the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. The second piece she has chosen to direct is William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying. It is a tragi-comic family drama about death and dying and the underlying tensions in a family. It is a unique story that is so brilliantly composed that the reader is offered several points of view. The discrepancies and the varied personal approaches to the different characters offer a singular framework for adapting this book for the stage.
